Nelson Johnson Named Artist of the Year

Great news! The Hammonton Art District will present their annual ‘Artist of the Year’ to Nelson Johnson for writing Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City and The Northside: African Americans and the Creation of Atlantic City. The award is presented annually to a Hammonton resident whose work in the arts has contributed to the betterment and advancement of Hammonton.

There will be a reception at 7 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Eagle Theatre, 208 Vine St. Tickets are $30. To make a reservation, visit TheEagleTheatre.com or call (609) 704-5012.

Boardwalk Empire Scores 18 Emmy Nominations.

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences on Thursday announced the nominees for the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards. Boardwalk Empire received 18 nominations. The series is nominated for Best Drama, while Steve Buscemi received a nomination for Best Actor, drama, and Kelly McDonald received the nomination for Best Supporting Actress, drama.

The new Martin Scorsese-produced television series “Boardwalk Empire”—about Atlantic City in the age of Prohibition and starring the lanky actor Steve Buscemi—premieres on Sunday on HBO. Like most HBO series, not to mention most projects from Mr. Scorsese, “Boardwalk Empire” has been eagerly awaited since it was announced last year. [WSJ]

A big, enjoyably nasty piece of work, Boardwalk Empire zooms in on Atlantic City in the 1920s. Prohibition has just gone into effect, and the city’s corrupt treasurer — Steve Buscemi’s oily, funny, nihilistic, knobbykneed Nucky Thompson — is handing out favors and calling in markers right and left. Before joining the writing staff of “The Sopranos,” Terence Winter had worked on such illustrious classics as “The New Adventures of Flipper,” “Sister, Sister” and “The Cosby Mysteries.” As soon as Winter joined “The Sopranos” in its second season, however, he proved to be one of the best writers other than creator David Chase at capturing the malaise-ridden mob world of that series.
